Liver Biopsy
What is a Liver Biopsy?
A LIVER BIOPSY is a procedure done to take a sample of liver tissue which is then evaluated under a microscope by a pathologist. The procedure is done under either general anesthesia or conscious sedation. The patient is positioned on their back with their right hand above their head. The skin over lying the liver is then numbed with a local anesthetic. A sample of liver tissue is taken using a long fine needle. This only takes a second or two. This procedure is sometimes done with ultrasound. When the procedure is over a pressure dressing is placed over the site and the patient must lay on his right side for six hours. You or your child may experience mild pain at the biopsy site for 24 hours. You or your child may be drowsy as an effect of the general anesthesia or sedation and should plan a quiet recovery at home for the remainder of the day. Quiet activities should continue the following day. Normal activities may resume 48 hours post procedure. |
