Special Interests:
Dr. Ryan's research is primarily directed to the potential role for growth factors in the repair of the alveolar epithelium after lung injury. Dr. Ryan recently has focused on the effects of several specific growth factors including keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha) on alveolar repair. Specifically, Dr. Ryan is utilizing three models involving hyperoxic lung injury in newborn rabbits, ventilator induced lung injury in chronically ventilated premature sheep and a temporally-inducible transgenic mouse model of KGF receptor blockage to study type II cell proliferation during lung repair. Dr. Ryan's clinical research interests include neonatal ventilation, post-PPHN systemic hypertension, thrombolytic gene variants, breastfeeding and formula feeding effects, and neonatal Candida colonization and disease.
