Kaleida Health Libraries support the patient care needs and lifelong learning requirements of hospital staff, community-based health care providers, patients, family members and caregivers by insuring access to the most current information in all formats. Knowledge-based information is the power that drives outstanding patient care and the Kaleida Health Libraries are dedicated to meeting the complete information needs of affiliated health care providers and their patients.
The libraries are empowered to conduct information-gathering
activities in behalf of our patrons. The libraries offer a growing
selection of resources via the Internet that are tailored to the needs
of the organization’s healthcare
practitioners. The library
staff is committed to building the virtual library so that
patron’s may
obtain the finest quality medical information wherever and whenever it
is needed.
Services
The Libraries offer a wide-range of services and
resources:
- Reference assistance in person, by phone, fax or email.
- Literature search service provided by professionally trained
librarians.
- Inter and Intra-library Loans in all fields for materials not
owned by the Libraries.
- Beginning 2005 some Interlibrary Loans may only be available
for a fee.
- Consumer health services for patients, families and our
community.
- Appropriate, accurate, quality information.
- Database searching using HUBNET and the WWW.
- Use of computer equipment and software.
- Educational programs: HUBNET and Internet training workshops.
- Book purchase discounts and assistance (for healthcare
providers only).
Collections
Books: KALEIDA
Libraries hold approximately
8,272 books. Topics include medicine, surgery, pediatrics,
dentistry, basic biomedical sciences, allied health, health care
management and consumer health.
Journals: Many journals
are available in
print at Kaleida Health Libraries. Beginning in 2005 those
journals available online through HUBNET will not be subscribed to in
print.
Audiovisual materials:
The libraries own the
audio-digest series, NCME videotapes, CIBA slides and the equipment
that is required to use these materials.
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES:
Kaleida Health Library Catalog is the
shared online catalog
of Kaleida Health Libraries. The system identifies books,
journals, and slides owned by the libraries at Women &
Children’s
Hospital, Buffalo General Hospital, and Millard Fillmore
Hospitals (Gates and Suburban).
HUBNET is a collaborative health
information network
providing access to bibliographic databases (online indexes) such as
Medline, CINAHL, PsychInfo and more. These databases are used
to
identify references published in the peer-reviewed journal
literature. Full text electronic journals, currently over 300
titles, as well as reference books, manuals, and drug information also
are available.
